REVIEW: MercyMe “Almost There Platinum Edition” (CMW)

Has it really been five years since MercyMe exploded onto the Christian music scene with a wholly new spin on worship music? My, how time flies when you’re having fun! It was in 2001 when MercyMe’s first commercial album hit the charts. Almost There showcased the rock sound that the band had strived for, applying the method to such tunes as “Here Am I”, “I Worship You”, and “On My Way to You”.

But it was the emotional yet quietly unassuming ballad, “I Can Only Imagine”, which Bart Millard had written in memory of his recently deceased father, that unexpectedly grabbed the world by storm. Intended as a B-side song for one of the group’s prior independently released singles, the song began getting requests at live performances.
