VIDEO: Art Alexakis Of Everclear On “Hater” Video

September 15th, 2006 | Videos | Source: videoadmin (325)

Bill O’Riley recently interviewed Art Alexakis, lead singer of Everclear, on the “true meaning” of their recent video which depicts a man in a crown of thorns bench pressing a cross, meating strippers, knocking out an old lady, stealing her neckless, robbing a homeless man, drinking “holy water” and driving at the same time.

Art also comments on the video in this interview from UGO.com.

At the end of the day, we at CMWired.com are still a little confused. What’s your opinion?

I think it is unfortuate that Christian images and icons are continuing to be used incorrectly in mainstream media. This is just the latest example in a long list including Madonna’s concert cross, Kayne West’s cover image with a crown of thorns, etc. It just feels like these are sacred symbols of religion. To use them to get a message across that something different than the gospel is just…well…wrong. I don’t know. I’m glad O’Rilley called him out on a number of fronts.

I think that Bill O’Reilly and most of the religious freaks out there need to realize there is a difference between reality and fantasy. Yes, Everclear’s video is based on Art’s personal issues, but it is fantasy. All music videos and movies and music is fantasy, it is not reality. I think if people are worried about their children or other people not knowing the difference between reality and fantasy they need to teach their children the difference. Everything is left to interpretation with art such as music and movies. I think people need to grow up and if they don’t like it don’t watch it or listen to it.
