On its latest disc, “Good Monsters,” Jars of Clay paddles back to the sound of “Flood,” the song that went to No. 1 on the secular charts in 1995 and vaulted the contemporary Christian band into the vanguard of alt-rock acts that opened the door to mainstream success for the likes of Creed and P.O.D. But guitarist Matthew Odmark says Jars’ return to thudding, straightforward rock from the acoustic and electronic sounds that marked its more recent discs was far from a calculated business move.
“I think we were kind of surprised at the end of the writing to see how much of the material really was pretty rock `n’ roll in its approach and then, too, how excited we were about it,” Odmark says during a telephone conversation from Atlanta. […read more]
