ARTICLE: Mark Schultz On Being Adopted

I was two weeks old when I was adopted. I jokingly tell people that it was the hardest two weeks of my life with all the paperwork involved, but after I got through that, everything has run pretty smoothly.

But seriously, in March of ‘03 before a concert, I was talking to two ladies over dinner that were helping backstage. By coincidence, they both happened to work at an adoption agency. Upon learning I was adopted, one of the ladies asked me if I had ever met my birth mom. “No,” I said, “I really never had a desire when I was growing up.” “Why not?” she asked. I told her I had a great mom and dad and besides, “If my birth mom was really interested in me why wouldn’t she have kept me instead of giving me up.” It seemed strange to seek out and find someone who never really wanted me in the first place.
