INTERVIEW: Soul P Talks God, Hip-Hop and Goerge W. Bush

Soul P. (formerly Soul Plasma) is a Portland MC with two albums, Simply Soul and Soul Affect, under his belt. His third album, The Premiere, is scheduled for release on December 26 on the Christian Rap label, Beatmart (a subsidiary of Sony). The first time I met P, I quickly dropped the stupid disclaimer that while I wasn’t “religious or anything,” I was a fan of his music. “I’m not religious either,” he quickly confided, adding that he saw himself as an MC who happened to have a spiritual message.

When I wrote on Localcut that I thought the Beatmart deal could have a watering-down effect on P’s message, which gives near equal time to spiritual matters and the struggle against injustice here on Earth, P gave me a call: “You know I love this stuff,” he said in a voice mail. “You can ask me about religion or politics or whatever man, and you know I’m gon’ be authentic with it.”
