The Christian crunk scene has come to Fort Wayne. John Bennett, a 20-year-old local Christian hip-hop artist, says the high-energy style has been turning up the volume lately at local clubs and religious youth events. “I’ve been doing a lot of shows, and I’m starting to see a more up-tempo type of beat to get youth involved,” Bennett says.
“The music is crunk, but lyrics are more Gospel-felt and into Scripture. But they’re drawing them in with the music of the world, the music that the secular world uses.” Bennett says he does a couple of “crunk-type” numbers, which he defines as hip-hop that uses high-volume, “hard-hitting bass beats” and a powerful delivery of strongly worded lyrics.
