Christian rock is cool, perhaps for the first time ever. After decades of being relegated to a ghetto of their own festivals, tour circuits and record labels, bands that are down with ol’ J.C. are being embraced by the secular world, owing in large part to the success of songwriter Sufjan Stevens.
Best known for his 50 States project (an album per state) and lush orchestral pop, Stevens has never obscured his faith — songs on every album mention God — but his music never puts praise before craftsmanship. Rather, like the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson (to whom he is frequently compared), Stevens builds magnificent compositions that serve as statements of faith, awe and reverence — rather than proselytizing.
