On Jars of Clay’s latest record, “Good Monsters,” the Christian acoustic rock group takes a stab at drug addiction in the song “Surprise.” With meandering keyboard notes and soft vocals, it’s a somber, reflective dance that tries to understand why addicts find comfort in the sharp poke and euphoric plunge of a needle. In the song’s chorus, vocalist Dan Haseltine sings, “These are just placebos to make us feel all right.” It seems he’s talking about drug addicts using narcotic dreams to hide from the problems in their lives.
