Relient K’s latest CD, “Five Score and Seven Years Ago,” begins with an eyewitness account of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. It contains a dark rocker called “Faking My Own Suicide” and another song that goes, “And what we’ve been striving for/Has turned into nothing more/Than bodies limp on the floor.”

Yet the 10-year-old pop and punk band from Canton, Ohio, has a foolproof method for not taking itself too seriously. Every album contains at least one goofy song - such as 2003’s “In Love With the 80’s (Pink Tux to the Prom)” or a Christmas album that same year containing “Santa Claus Is Thumbing to Town” - to lighten the mood. In the case of the band’s very serious new album, this happens to be “Must Have Done Something Right,” a toe-tapping ballad with Beach Boys “bop bop bops” and a driving Motown bassline. […read more]
